We have been using growbags for years, which are virtually soft plastic troughs that are about 3ft long and about 6 ins deep and we have planted 3 beans per growbag. We have had a good crop of runner beans each year.

yes you can grow lots of things in pots and troughs. i would think 6 inches deep would be ok for runners beans. ive got about 4 inches between mine and they’re doing fine ive got 9 plants growing up a trellis and thats enough to feed me and hubby and fill my freezer.. good luck

Not really, best use grow bags. Start them off in small pots and keep indoors til about 7 inches high. They love compost, so use tomorite. Remember they are climbers so some sort of frame is necessary.

You can grow loads of stuff in growbags, so as long as your troughs are deeper than a growbag you can do it.Its best to get the deepest ones you can find as they don’t dry out so fast in hot weather.
Or if you’re handy, get some cheap wood (like roofing slats) and make some wooden containers to sit growbags in. The bags look tatty but in a wooden container they’re hidden and work ok. Next year you can line the wooden troughs with black plastic and empty the old grow bags into them to re-use the compost.

I’ve never heard of "runner" beans, only pole beans that need a pole (duh) to climb up. To grow some good beans, green beans in limited space, you might want to try Bush beans. In a planter 10 inches deep and 2ft long you could grow 12 plants, planting the beans 2 inches apart, and have plenty of beans. Once you pick them, they’ll bloom again and produce more. The more you pick them the more they will produce. And on and on and on until you almost get sick of green beans.

I sujest 12" pots as runner beans prefer deep soil. it would be best to plant one of the dwarf varieties as it will save having to make a support frame. plant ut to ten seads to each pot
