The recent heavy rain has filled a large container in the garden which is now full of tadpoles?

By admin | March 31, 2010

My youngest insists on keeping them until they become frogs. I love frogs myself but i worry there’s nothing in this container for the little ones to live on. I’m sure that if we put them in the main pond the fish will eat them. Any suggestions?

I think you should take them to a permanent pond as they will return to spawn when they are fully grown and the container will be gone by then. If the fish eat them then so be it…nature will take her course!

Find a pond where some tadpoles already live, that way you know the conditions will be good for them to survive to become frogs.

You can put dirt in the bucket which is something they feed on or something along the line of that i wouldn’t put them in the pond if you don’t want them eaten i would take the safe route, look up what tadpoles eat and what not on google, and experiment.

    Hope i helped

If you want to make a go of raising these tadpoles (which would be educational for your daughter, this page may help

my pond has koi carp and they don’t eat the taddies.you may find that yours don’t either.i have tadpoles and baby newts, both feed off the fish food or throw a piece of bread in and watch as they gather round it and push it around! all fascinating stuff for your child to watch.good luck

Off the subject…stagnant shallow water is ideal for breeding mosquitoes. You should drain these spots in the Spring to avoid mosquitoes.

Put some tadpoles in the pond with the fish. Also take some water from the fish pond and put in a separate container for the tadpoles- there will be small things in there for the tadpoles to eat. Top up the fishpond from the big container (if necessary). If you keep the tadpoles container low to the ground then various creatures will find their way in, for the tadpoles to eat. Spear a slug or two for good measure. And if all else fails they will eat each other.

Put the tadpoles in the pond. Some may make it, some may not. Survival of the fittest.

I have always done this when a kid too…make sure to put some way they can get out of the container once they start developing legs..These particular frogs are more than likely not a breed that needs to be near a stream but are genetically designed to be hatched in palm frond dents, banana leaves or any spot that will hold water for a bit..they will be fine in the container…Same as here in Florida we have quite a few species that never even see a river or a stream, such as our tree frogs etcetera… They wait for good heavy rains and lay eggs in anything that will trap water..here is a link that will help you out..do not release them in a strweam..they are not frogs that live in streams..let the child enjoy them and watch them grow…do not add dirt as suggested..here this link will help you alot..
