You can buy the little windowsill kits which usually have herbs like basil, chives and mint which all grow well. I have also grown minitaure tomatoes in pots on the windowsill and they grow really well

First, find which window have some sunlight enters or as a best place to put your pots or container box.
Easy to grow herbs are peppermint, celery and basil. They grow fast and you just need to water them daily with good moist soil.

Look at this little gadget that *I* am in line to get for the winter, lets you grow them hydroponically: http://www.aerogrow.com/

Can you fit a window box outside? That would be best, but if not the window sill can have basil, parsley, chives etc that you can cut and go back to for more… Mint too, but that needs its own pot or it will take over and smother anything else!
Have fun and good luck

first you need sunshine whereever you plan to put them. If you put them on a windowsill – and the sun shines in- they could get too cold at night and to hot and burn during the day. a north or south facing window is best. east is next best but west is definitely out.
plan on only growing them for a short time – a month or two then throw out and buy new seedlings.
they need to be set on a waterproof tray that has a layer of gravel or small rocks on the bottom. this is so the bottom of the seed trays doesn’t sit in water and rot.
you can grow leaf lettuce, parsley, chives, sprouts. If you have a larger area you can grow miniature vegees such as tomatoes. they need weekly liquid fertilizer put in their watering.
